How To Prevent Nappy Rash

What is Nappy Rash?

A red rash that appears around the groin (where the guards of the nappy sit) or pretty much anywhere on a baby’s bottom and genitalia. Mild diaper rash may be accompanied by small pink spots or blotches. For server nappy rash you may notice bright red spots, dry, cracked or broken skin, ulcers, blisters, maybe some swelling or bleeding. A severe rash will require immediate treatment to stop secondary infection setting in.

What Causes Nappy Rash?

• Ammonia in urine or bowel motions
• Antibiotics
• Diarrhea
• Heat and Humidity
• Reaction to food
• Teething

Some infants have more sensitive skin than others, for some a rash can appear as quick as the next nappy change, after a ride in the car or in as little as 10 minutes of a bowel motion. If your baby is forever getting a re-occurring rash it is best to dry your baby’s nappy area thoroughly and use a barrier cream with each nappy change to help prevent nappy rash.

Nappy/Diaper Rash Treatment

Mild Nappy/Diaper Rash:

  • Give your baby a warm bath and wash the area affected area gently.
  • Dry your baby thoroughly.
  • Let your baby kick around on the floor with no nappy on to let their skin breathe.
  • Apply a barrier cream such as zinc or castor oil cream before putting a nappy on.
  • If you are using disposable nappies try to find a brand that is breathable (no plastic outer).
  • If using cloth nappies use a liner these help draw the wet away from your baby’s skin.
  • Change your baby’s nappy on a regular basis.

Severe Nappy/Diaper Rash

  • See your doctor to ensure there is no infection. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic cream as well as a barrier cream.
  • Follow all the steps for mild rash above.
  • To help settle angry skin and encourage healing, try bathing your baby twice a day.
  • Give your little one lots of cuddles, they will be feeling very sore and uncomfortable especially when urinating or passing a bowel motion.
  • Turn your sniffer on! If you smell even the slightest wiff of a dodgy nappy, change it straight away. If left unchanged it can irritate the skin further causing a burning and stinging sensation.

Keep your little ones happy and use measures to prevent diaper rash. There are plenty of natural nappy treatments and over the counter creams that can help prevent and clear up nappy rash.
